The need for emulators is finally gone. SEGA are releasing all of the retro classics for your smartphone. The company announced a new service called SEGA Forever, which will include “nearly every SEGA game ever released from every console era – Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive, Dreamcast, and more”. These game will be released for free on both Android and iOS. I say free, but that is only if you want ads. You can pay $1.99 to turn the ads off, but even at that price, you can’t really go wrong for the number of titles that you will be given.
At launch, SEGA announced that there will be five titles, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II. These won’t be the only 5 titles that are coming to SEGA Forever. SEGA have said that they plan to release new titles to the collection every two weeks! That means you could soon have you ultimate retro console games collection with you at all times because let’s face it, you never leave the house without your phone. To make things even better, these games can be played offline, unlike other games *cough* Mario *cough* and the games supports wireless Bluetooth controllers.
Retro games like these never go out of style. Nostalgia is something that a lot of gamers love. Look at Nintendo for example. They released an updated version of the NES Classic. Fans are so obsessed with the NES Classic that the moment stock becomes available, it sells out in minutes. This is a really smart move from SEGA and I look forward to seeing what games they release in the coming weeks.
The five launch titles will be available worldwide starting June 22nd, 2017. Let me know in the comments what game you are most excited to see come to your Android or iOS device.
