Twitter verification, that little tick beside your username that means so much. Well not really, but everyone want’s it. It used to be a case that you had to have a big following or be famous enough for twitter to recognise you as a legitimate applicant for the tick.
As of today, that little blue tick that is so sought after is a lot easier to obtain. Twitter has opened up an application that will allow any user to apply for verification.
The new application process was announced via an official blog post by Twitter. The fact that they are opening up the application process to everyone does not mean that every account will be accepted. The blog post mentions that “an account may be verified if it is determined to be of public interest.”
“Our goal with this update is to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers – no matter where they are in the world – to easily connect with a broader audience,” the post said.
Twitter previously opened up applications to be verified but the application process was stopped due to an overwhelming amount of applications that were sent in.
In order to submit the application your account must have a verified phone number, confirmed email, profile & header photo, a website and tweets set to public. There also other guidelines which I wont bore you with here.
Personally I think that if Twitter handles this well, it could be a step forward. However, with the amount of applications that will be sent in, they will either have too many applications and discontinue the process again or they will make it far too easy for users to be verified. If it is the latter, then having a verified account may end up being entirely pointless. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
